The Help

Rating: 8
Genre: Adult Drama
Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard

Jackson, Mississippi 1963. Jim Crow is still alive. Blacks and whites co-exist, but the old order of casual apartheid is experiencing a few strains which suggest it can't last forever. Into this milieu steps young Skeeter Phelan (Stone) fresh out of college with a job at the local newspaper and a skeptical attitude toward local conventions - especially the manner in which maids are treated.

She surreptitiously conducts a series of interviews center on Aiblileen (Davis) and Minnie (Spencer.) The result is a very interesting movie, particularly for those of us who may have been involved in some version of this culture growing up in the 40's and 50's. There are some overdrawn stereotypes such as the uptight young wife and mother played by Howard, but perhaps her role is necessary to enhance the drama of the prevailing attitudes of that period.
