The Jones family of four moves into a posh neighborhood, and they establish a lifestyle that is the envy of the neighbors. That’s the point. They are not a real family, but a marketing unit whose purpose is to get others to buy into their conspicuous consumption, in other words to “keep up with the Joneses.” They have their own sales quotas and things go according to plan. Before long, neighbors begin to spend beyond their means and debts pile up.
After a tragic suicide occurs, the Joneses are unable to continue their pretense. This is an interesting satire on our consumer culture. The message would have been sharper if the movie had ended sooner. The “love conquers all” ending was unnecessary.
