Jumping the Broom

Rating: 6
Genre: Adult Comedy/Drama
Time: 1:45
Starring: Paula Patton, Angela Bassett, Laz Alonzo, Julie Bowen

Another movie about pre-wedding hi-jinx. This one is set at the picture postcard home of the bride's wealthy family at Martha's Vineyard. The groom was brought up under far less affluent circumstances. The two mothers meet for the first time at the beginning of the wedding weekend and have a visceral dislike for one another.

The cultural clash between the two African-American families, especially the mothers, is the focus of the movie, which handles things mostly with good humor. However, at the end, there's too much melodrama as the groom's mother tires to sabotage the ceremonies, and this tends to interfere with the comedic flow. A couple of the characters are somewhat overdrawn.
