I got the idea that all these notable actors got together and decided to have some fun at the expense of the typical, mindless action thriller that Hollywood turns out in steady profusion. Actually, RED (an acronym for "retired, extremely dangerous") starts like this.

But before long you realize it's a parody and you settle back and enjoy the action. It's got all the usual ingredients--spectacular explosions, the latest in lethal weaponry, demolished cars, etc. Willis is a retired CIA operative whose home is invaded by a large group of masked men with guns blazing. He escapes to Kansas City where he abducts Mary-Louise Parker against her will.

For mysterious reasons, Willis is being targeted by certain members of the current CIA, so he gathers together his old gang (Malkevich, Freeman, and Mirren) along with a former Russion spook. Now attracted to Willis, Parker buys into the activities of the gang. It eventually turns out that the US vice president is key to the shenanigans. Things happen fast and furiously. Don't try to figure it all out. Just go along with the comdey.
