The White Ribbon

Rating: 5
Length of Movie: 2:15
Starring: Christian Friedel, Susanne Lather, Rainer Rock
Genre: Adult, Drama

Friday's local paper carried this movie with 3.5 out of 4 stars. It looked like it had potential. It's set in a small German farming village just before WW1. Bad things begin to happen. The local doctor is seriously injured in a horse-riding accident. A mother falls to her death in a sawmill. The baron who controls the local economy is having problems with the baroness. A handicapped youth is beaten up and left for dead in the woods. And more. Rumors abound. The movie's narrator, a school teacher, developes some ideas about what is going on and he tries to tie things together, but is frustrated by a lack of concrete evidence. Fraught with symbolism, the movie apparently tries to make us believe that it all leads to the rise of Nazism in the subsequent years, but I have trouble seeing this connection. The movie is a bit too long and not all that credible. (In German w/ subtitles)
