Starring: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti
Genre: Mature Audience, Drama, Romance
Plummer is Leo Tolstoy, and Mirren is his wife of 48 years, Sofia. The movie is set in 1910 at Tolstoy's estate, which has been turned into a commune to advance Tolstoy's movement based on abolishing property rights and promoting passive resistance. Giamatti is the main disciple of Tolstoy who is bent on keeping him on course and frustrating Sofia's rights to the inheritance of his bountiful literary works. Tolstoy's life with Sofia becomes intolerable and he moves by train to an inn in Southern Russia, the so-called Last Station, where he lives out his final days. The movie revolves around the intense clash among Tolstoy, Sofia, and Giamatti's character, and highlights three outstanding actors. It's a good one, but not a box office winner.
