The Reader

Rating: 6

Starring: Kate Winslett, Ralph Fiennes,David Kross

Plot: Fifteen-year-old boy enjoys a torrid affair with Winslett, some 20 years his senior. One day she disappears. Some eight years later, his law class attends a trial of former Nazi guards who led Jews to their inceneration, and finds Winslett on trial. She is convicted and sentenced to life. During her incarceration the young boy has turned into a man played by Fiennes who reconnects with Winslett by sending her tapes of books. It turns out she has been illiterate. Since the movie has been acclaimed in Academy Award nominations I expected to like it better than I did. Perhaps it's because the story seemed implausable and somewhat disconnected.
