The Conspirator

Rating: 7
Genre: Adult Drama
Starring: Robin Wright, James McAvoy, Tom Wilkerson, Kevin Kline

Mary Stuart, owner of a boarding house in Washington, DC is one of the alleged conspirators in the assassination of President Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. Frederick Aiken, a young Union war hero is assigned the unenviable task of defending her before a military tribunal. Although unaffected, Aiken immerses himself into her defense. Director Robert Redford makes a statement against military justice. He goes overboard in portraying Secretary of War Stanton as a vengeful villain. That being said, the movie is an interesting one and well worth watching if you want to know more about an intense period in American history.

Wright's portrayal of Surratt is believable, and the same is true of McAvoy as Aiken. Was Surratt's involvement sufficient to justify hanging?
