The King’s Speech

Rating: 9
Genre: Drama
Starring: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Bonham Carter

Firth is King George VI plagued from early childhood by a serious speech impediment. When his older brother famously abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry twice-divorced Wallace Simpson, he was thrust into a job he really didn’t want. This is the story of the relationship between the King and his speech therapist, artfully played by Rush as the two of them combine to overcome the handicap. It is a superbly crafted film and a great history lesson woven around the period leading up to WWII. Carter’s role as the gentle, but persistent, wife of the newly crowned king is well acted. This is one of the best movies in recent memory, but it’s very disappointing to see the paltry theater attendance numbers.
