Cyrus

Rating: 8
Length of Movie: 1:32
Starring: John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, Catherine Keener
Genre: Mature Audience, Comedy, Drama

Seven years into divorce, Reilly is having trouble extricating himself from his self-imposed sloth. He can’t seem to make the effort to meet members of the opposite sex. His ex-wife, with whom he’s still friendly, forces him to attend a party, whereupon he hits the jackpot. He meets Tomei and they have an immediate, albeit somewhat implausible, attraction. A big problem soon develops in the form of her manipulative live-in 21-year-old son. The movie focuses on the warfare between the two as the son tries to prevent any disruption in his sometimes weird relationship with his mother. The movie has occasional humor, and the characters are not overdrawn. It seemed to me to have an ambiguous ending. That’s ok because how do you predict any situation like this one is supposed to work out?
