Two boys in their pre-teens, one the son of a prosperous inhabitant of Kabul, the other, son of his servant, develop a close friendship built around kite flying, among other things. An unfortunate rift occues coincidental with the Russian invasion in 1979. The story shifts to San Francisco as one of the boys graduates from college, and he is eventually called back to Afghanistan, now under the thumb of the Taliban, to rescue his friend, whose father is now deceased.
Outstanding drama.
