The Artist

Rating: 7
Genre: Silent Drama
Starring: Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodwin, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller
Length: 1:40

How engaging can a silent film be? This one had a good run at the Golden Globe awards. It's the story of an idol of the silent films in the 1920's. Suddenly, talkies arrive and his career is in the dumpster. The next thing you know, the Great Depression forces him into penury. A young protege of his makes the transition and becomes the hottest female star on the talkie scene. She is moved by her former mentors' plight and she takes an interest in reviving his career. It's a touching story. Although the dialogue is muted, enough words are projected in bold letters (subtitles) to make sure you know what is going on. One of the stars is a terrier who is devoted to the aging silent film star. He will remind you of Eddie on the Frasier show.
