Margin Call

Rating: 7
Genre: Adult Drama
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, Zachary Quinto

The movie is set in the crisis atmosphere of one day at a large investment bank (most likely a fictionalized Lehman Brothers.) A risk management officer discovers that the firm's highly leveraged balance sheet of mortgage securities has jeopardized its solvency. The officer (Tucci) is being downsized. On his way out of the office on his final day, he hands over his work program to a junior member who alerts others of the firm's desperate situation. Meetings are held throughout the night as the movie focuses on the motives, reactions, and survival plans of the firm's principals. The next morning tension grips everyone as large amounts of securities of dubious value are dumped into the market.

The movie is well done and avoids much of the preachiness you might expect from Hollywood on this subject. Wall Street jargon dominates the dialogue, and it may be more interesting to some than others.
