Giamatti is one of the best actors around, or maybe I say this because he always seems to play interesting characters. This movie is all about one of those characters, Barney, who produces a long-lived soap opera and who drinks heavily and smokes too many cigars.
Barney falls in love at his own wedding party to a woman he has just met. He pursues her relentlessly. He eventually divorces his nagging obnoxious Jewish princess (Driver), and marries the object of his pursuit (Pike). For many years they enjoy a compatible marriage. Hoffman plays Barney's father, who suddenly dies under interesting circumstances. The movie is a good combination of humor and sadness.
