Sugar

Rating: 8

Genre: Drama

Starring: Qlgenis Perez Soto

Plot: According to the official Register of organized baseball, there are 41 players named Martinez and 29 named Ramirez on major and minor league roster in 2009. The acknowledged best of all currently active players was born in January 1980 in the Dominican Republic. This may give you some idea of the massive influx of talent into major league baseball from the Carribean area. Kids play baseball year-round from morning till night on the sand-lots of the Dominican.

"Sugar"was a young pitching phenom who was recruited to play in the lower minors in rural Iowa. He struggles with the middle American culture. He injures his ankle after a few promising starts and fails to regain his form. He quits before the end of the season, and flies to New York City in hopes of joining up with a friend. At this point, you can anticipate a steady downhill slide in his life. The movie is well done and tends to avoid some of the expected worn out cliches. It is slow paced, and not for everyone. Surprisingly, it ends hopefully.
