Rating: 9 out of 10
Genre: Adult Comedy & Drama
Plot: Buck Howard (Malkovich) is a hyptomist/mentalist/magician who has seen better days. In earlier times, he made numerous appearances on the Johnny Carson show. He is now reduced to playing before smaller crowds in smaller cities, but he hasn't lost his gift of showmanship. Colin Hanks drops out of law school to serve as Howard's "gopher" as they travel around the country. There are several humerous situations. For instance, while in Cincinnati, he hatches a grand plan to hypnotize 90 people, only to be upstaged when the media leaves to cover a small car accident involving Jerry Springer.
This is a movie that Hollywood could have butchered with a lot of crude humor. Instead, it's a satire DVDthat is handled with a lighter touch. Every once in a while we stumble accross a good movie that is not given much advance hype; this is one. But I can't guarantee it will be in the local theatre long. You may have to catch it on DVD.
