Adapted from and award-winning stage play, this film is seen as an allegory of moralistic intolerance, close-minded certainly versus reasonable doubt. Streep is the principal of a strict Catholic grade school. She fabricates her own case against Hoffman, the parish priest. Accusing him of improper advances toward a young student. Streep and Hoffman are convincing in their confrontational roles, and Amy Adams acts well as Streep's naive foil.
