Mama Mia

Rating: 6 out of 10

Genre: Musical

Starring: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosman, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried

Rating: PG13

I've never been a big fan of musicals; nobody I know has been able to overcome life's obstacles by singing and dancing. In this one, as in most, people belt out a song at the slightest provocation and dancers seem to appear from nowhere. Yet it all seems to be in good fun. Streep again displays her versatility; she can really sing, but Brosman can't sing a lick. By the way, there's an underlying plot of a young bride-to-be trying to determine which of three men is her father, and she invites them all to her wedding.

The movie crowd broke out in applause at the end, and there was a long line waiting for the next showing, all of which may indicate that people are hungry for something other than computerized violence.
